What’s one thing your team can do to shutdown the opponent’s best offensive player? Roof them! Which translates to a great block. It may come to a surprise to many of you, but blocking is the best defense anyone or any team can have. If you can limit the opponent from hitting the ball over, your defense doesn’t have to be as active. It will also benefit your defense by covering up holes and gaps. This allows the defenders to position themselves to the outside of the blockers instead of being all over the place.

One of the most important things to blocking is your position. Placing yourself in a good position to block the spiker will give you an advantage over them. It gives you the nod to win the battle on declaring which side the ball will land. Team blocking and individual blocking are very similar, but if you can be an accomplished single blocker, you’re team blocking abilities will be even better.

Make sure you know the trajectory of where the ball may be attacked. Remember, the spiker will not hit the ball if it’s completely underneath the top of the net. They want to try to hit ball when it’s falling down from its highest peak. For single blocking, place yourself in the middle of where the ball may land. Some teams may run faster balls, resulting in the ball shooting towards the spiker. This is when you’ll need to pay attention to your assigned spiker. The left player will block the weak side hitter, middle to block the middle hitter, and right side player to block the strong side hitter. Keeping an eye on your spiker at all times is relevant to where you’ll be positioning yourself to have the advantage over them.

Expanding further into watching the spiker, you’ll need to notice if they’re a left or right-handed hitter. This will decipher where you should be positioning yourself for a great block. Wherever the spiker’s hitting shoulder socket will be at the contact of the ball, area where the arm is attached to the shoulder, you’ll want place yourself in the middle looking straight at their shoulder socket. This isn’t always true, but in most cases it helps. Some spiker’s even lean too far in making their shoulders perpendicular to the net. You have a huge advantage when a spiker does this because 9 out of 10 times whichever way they’re facing, that’s where they’re planning to hit the ball.

Bend your knees! It definitely helps to give you a boast for your vertical. There’s more to blocking than just jumping up and putting your hands up. You have to factor in timing, moving your hands and arms to the appropriate spot where the spiker is hitting, and spreading your fingers. You can either jump with the spiker or jump later. Most blockers jump up to block after the spiker does, but some spikers are high flyers so you’ll need to jump with them. Remember you can move your arms and hands; they shouldn’t just go straight up, they need to be spread out or shifting left or right. One very important thing to remember is to spread your fingers. When you spread them out, you cover more area to potentially block the spiker.

Team blocking is very crucial. Most teams use two blockers, but there have been rare cases where they need all three in Hmong volleyball. Covering just two blockers, the outside blocker, which is the other player that is blocking with the middle blocker, needs to set the edge. What this means is the outside blocker will set themselves in a position on the edge where the ball may land. This blocker’s objective is the block line. They’re setting the edge because they understand that their middle blocker is shifting over to help block the cross hit. If the outside blocker has a bad angle too far outside or inside of the hitter, the middle blocker is forced to cover the gap in between the two, or leave a gap wide open for the spiker to freely hit the ball into. The spiker may also go line if the outside blocker goes too far inside. A good tip to follow by for the outside blocker is to make sure your inside hand is on the ball and our outside hand is covering the line shot. As the middle blocker, you should always cover the gap and have the spiker hit the ball across the court. This is the furthest the ball can travel and it allows your defense to have more time to dig the ball up. Some very good blockers don’t always cover the open gap. They understand where the hitter is going and can read, react, and execute where the ball is going.
