The Start of Competitive Volleyball // Part 2 - Defense

It's simple, defense wins championships. Not only defense, but with a great defensive team, you're chances of winning increase. How many names for Hmong volleyball can you come up with when someone mentions great defense? Not many. Defenders are not remembered because it's not flashy like a great spike from the offense.

Here's one very important thing to remember when playing defense, bend your knees. Far too many Hmong athletes stand too tall which results in a slow reaction and extra movement that is not necessary. When you bend your knees, you remove the jerking effect you have when going for dinks or shifting side to side. Every second counts in volleyball. One wasted movement can cause you to dig the ball just enough to pop it back up in play.

Secondly, know who's going to hit the ball. Depending on who the hitter is, they'll have tendacies. Either it's always going line, cross, deep, down inside the 10 foot line, their body movement, or their strength. A line hit is defined as hitting towards the closest out of bounce line left or right. Cross is hitting towards the furthest out of bounce line. Hitting a deep ball is striking a ball towards the back line where you serve from. A ball that is placed inside the 10 foot line is putting the ball very near the net. Measure 10 feet from the net into the defending court. Not many players can hit in this area, but when they do, it's very hard to defend.

Next, the position you choose to stand against the hitter. There's a lot to factor into this, but here's a brief overview. Notice who's blocking for your team. If there are one, two, or three blockers, it can vary on where you should position yourself. If there's one blocker, its any one's guess on where you should be positioning your self. If you've studied the spiker, you'll have a perspective of where they may hit the ball. If you only have one blocker, it allows the spiker to have too many options to spike the ball. If there are two blockers, you just have to realize if they will close in the gap in-between them while they're blocking, or leaving it open. Good blockers will know how to block together. Other than that, position your self to sit in the open area, and react towards the spike. Now, if there are three blockers, the spiker has less options to hit the ball. Notice this and take advantage of it. Position yourself in an area where they may place the ball. One more important factor when playing the middle back defender is not play so far back. Here's a tip. If you put your arms up and the angle of the ball, if it reached your hands, will be going out, you're too close to the line. Move your self up because the middle area is very hard to cover. Know that if the ball goes over your head, you always have the option to jump and bump it back in to play or take a step back to get it. It's harder for you to step up than back.

Again, the more practice you get, the better your defense will be. If you follow these simple steps, you're defense will improve tremendously. One last tip, you need to hustle. Too many Hmong athletes do not hustle. It's not just volleyball, but other sports too. If you out hustle your opponent, you'll surely have the upper hand of winning the game.
