The Start of Competitive Volleyball // Part 1 - Offense

Are you thinking about playing competitive volleyball? If your answer is yes, you are in the right place! First, there are two types of players, those who play competitively and those who play recreationally. Nothing is wrong with playing recreationally because you’re getting a good workout, but if you’re looking to spruce up your game, competitive volleyball is for you! Here is one of five points, in a five part blog session, to look for when developing a team.

Imagine... it’s the finals and you’re lined up in the front row. Hundreds of people are watching and your emotions are running high. Your team has game point; one point away from winning the championship. Wouldn’t your ideal scenario be to get the ball and get the last kill? Absolutely! To be honest, a lot of athletes start their volleyball career with offense being their best skill set. You may not think there’s much to hitting a ball on the other side of the court, but there are a lot of factors to recognize. Here’s a brief outline of what to look for.

First, your setter gives you a play to run. In Hmong volleyball, we do not have as many play numbers as traditional USAV, USA Volleyball. For instance, we only have the 1, 2, and 3. You can turn those into shoots, high balls, or low balls. On the other hand, USAV has 1,2,3,4,5, and 6. The 2 shoot in Hmong volleyball translates to the 32 in USAV terms. USAV play calls are more precise and the setter knows exactly how high or how far away from the net the ball needs to be. In Hmong volleyball, you can call a 3, but the ball isn’t exactly where you thought it would be. You may want it tighter or looser, depending on the player, but if you have a setter that knows the kinds of sets you admire, you have nothing to worry about. Second, your approach is important to where you can hit the ball. Jumping too close or too far can alter where your available areas to place the ball can go. It also depends on how close or far the setter places the set from the net. If it’s tight, most likely you will be blocked. You can squeeze the ball in, but at a big risk. If it’s loose, your percentage of getting the ball over is higher, but the area where you can place the ball is decreased. The areas where you can place the ball is only in the back row. Knowledge of where the ball will be set will help you set up your approach for a great hit.

Third, notice where your blockers are positioned and who that player is. Some players are better blockers than others, so depending on the player, it can depend on how well they can block. If there are two blockers and they are positioned too far away from each other, there’s presumably a gap in-between the two blockers to fit the ball into. If there’s only one blocker, you just have to visualize where they are and hit the ball the other way. Using your eyes is key. Notice where the set is going, glance at where your blockers are, follow the ball with your eyes, and when it’s close to the top of the net, put your eyes where your blocker’s hands are. Next, hit the ball in the open area, or just barely touching the blocker’s hands so the ball goes over. Also, if there’s a gap between the blocks and if there are two or more blockers, you can hit the ball in-between them. The gap isn’t the only place where you can place the ball, you also have the line shot, which is the line closest to where you’re hitting, or the cross, the furthest line away from you.

I hope this will help you improve some of your Volleyball skills. Knowing how to do something is different from executing it. If you can execute it, than all it takes is more repetition and you'll improving greatly.
