2010 NFL Scouting Combine

The NFL off-season has begun and the 2010 Draft is on its way, but before these college hopefuls hear their names being called, they will have to take part in the biggest “Make It” or “Break It” week of their careers, the Scouting Combine. The NFL Scouting Combine is a weeklong event starting Saturday, February 27th and ending Thursday, March 2nd. The combine which will take place in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis is created to test a player’s physical as well as mental IQ to see where each stands before teams decide to invest in drafting them. The combine can help an unknown jump up the draft boards, just like how Oakland Raiders Darrius Heyward-Bey did last year. Heyward-Bey was projected as a late first round to second round pick, but due to his fast 40-yard dash time, he was selected number 7 overall and the first wide receiver picked. The combine can also make a big name drop down the list such as Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers was projected to be the possible number 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, but dropped down to number 24 because most scouts thought he had bad quarterback mechanics.

The combine is made up of a number of physical tests such as the 40-yard dash, the vertical jump, and the cone drill. Although each test is timed and recorded, it doesn’t mean that the best times are a sure lock to be selected as a top pick. For instance, in the 40-yard dash, the average time for a running back or receiver is a 4.50 or better. And although Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals ran it in a 4.51, many thought it would be too slow of a time to take a chance on. He was still drafted as the 3rd overall pick in the 2004 Draft and has become one of the top receivers in the league. Others such as running back and reigning league MVP, Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans who recorded the fastest time in the 2008 combine with a 4.24 (40-yard dash) wasn’t chosen until the 24th overall pick and was the 5th running back to be drafted.

NFL Rookie Combine In addition to the physical tests, players will also have to participate in a number of interviews as well as pass the infamous Wonderlic Test. The Wonderlic Test is a twelve minute, 50 question test conducted to test a players’ IQ. Each position has a certain score that each player must meet or beat in order to pass the test. For example, quarterbacks must score at least a 24 and wide receivers at least a 17. In the history of the test there has only been one football player to score a perfect 50 and that is Pat McInally former punter for the Cincinnati Bengals (1976-1985). There have been some who did not pass and still have gone on to have great careers—most notably, Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino who scored a 15.

This year’s hopefuls looking to have a great combine include former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Tim Tebow and Stanford hard nose running back Toby Gerhart. Analysts have doubts about both players having what it takes to play in the next level. For Tebow, some think that he doesn’t have the proper mechanics to be a fulltime quarterback. And for Gerhart, they believe that he doesn’t have a fast enough burst or speed that scouts are looking for in a running back. Although it’s been reported that Tebow may not throw at the combine, look for both to try to impress scouts and to secure their spots in this year’s upcoming draft.

There are obvious mixed opinions about the NFL Scouting Combine. Some feel that the combine is a waste of time, that a players in-game skills are more important then any test done at the combine. They might be right because a cone doesn’t try to tackle you while you run your 40-yard dash. However, I see it as a chance for a college player from a small unknown school to standout, or a chance for someone who may have been injured to show that he has recovered and can play at pro level. The scouting combine is the last chance for players to make some noise and to raise their stocks before heading to Radio City Music Hall in New York City on April 22nd for the 2010 NFL Draft. I hope the Packers select an OT in the 1st round. One player I really like is Bryan Bulaga from Iowa. He fits the zone-blocking scheme and he can be a corner stone at LT for a long time to come. I also heard that Iowa linemen are very well coached for the NFL.

I was watching the NFL Combine on the NFL Network, and saw the OL's workout. Bruce Campbell is really impressing me with his athleticism. The dude's 6'6, nicely built, runs fast for an OL, and has a very nice vertical. I wouldn't mind if he fell to the packers at 23. Maybe TT can trade up for another 2 1st round picks & get McCluster and a OT.
